KUWAIT -- An environmental researcher has called on concerned authorities to halt fishing near BoubyanBoubyanLoading... Island, due to its fragile environmental situation.

Head of the Kuwaiti Bird Society, Engineer Abdulrahman Al-Sarhan, told KUNA on Friday that allowing fishermen to fish at BoubyanBoubyanLoading... Island has made birds avert the location.

The birds stay clear from the movement of people and boats, which often destroy their natural habitat," he explained.

Al-Sarhan added that the creeks in the island are were a location where fish liked to lay their eggs, and that tampering with such locations would reduce fish stock and subsequently drive the cost of fish on the market higher.

"Director General of the Environment Public Authority Dr. Salah Al-Muth'hi announced earlier the possibile total immersion of BoubyanBoubyanLoading... Island and other Kuwaiti islands by the year 2020, due to worldwide environmental changes that can cause a rise in sea level," added Al-Sarhan.

The island constitutes a sizeable five percent of the country's land mass at low tide, about 850 square kilometres, and around half that when the tide comes in.
